Photography Studio Lighting Basics

What are the different types of indoor studio lighting?

  • Key Light. If you could only use one artificial Light source, you're going to want to get a key Lighting

  • Fill Lighting

  • Hair Lighting / Separation Lighting / Kicker.

  • Background light

  • Camera Mounted Flash.

  • Rembrandt Lighting

  • Loop Lighting

  • Butterfly Lighting

When and how to use these 8 types of photography lighting?

  • Flat light. When you have your light source facing directly at the front of your subject, this is flat lighting

  • Broad light

  • Short light

  • Split light

  • Backlight

  • Rim light

  • Butterfly light

  • Loop light

What lighting is needed for studio photography ?

There are three major types continues lighting bulbs, Fluorescent , tungsten & LED. All types generate results , so choosing which to use mainly a matter of personal preference. Fluorescent is generally easier to find in studio lighting and does not overheat, so that is what most studio photographers use. There are 5 main characteristics of light, also Photography is writing with light so let's build our conversation about lighting on five fundamental characteristics of light . Direction, Intensity, Colour, Contrast, and Hardness.

How many Watts do you need for studio photography? Studio flash output is measured in watts per second , or Joules(basically the same thing) ,A home studio or small commercial studio will mange with lights of around 200w/s Larger studios will mostly only need up to around 400w/s-you rarely need to go any higher.

Lesson Objective'

The difference between Natural and artificial lighting.

Natural light, which produces heat and colour, comes from the radiati

on give off by the sun . Artificial light sources can consist of a filament that uses electricity or halogen gas to glow, or an electronic device that emits light. Some artificial lights use gas and electricity to produce light and heat.

There are some differences between sunlight and artificial light - most artificial light doesn't emit as much energy in the red and blue region of the light spectrum as sunlight does. The sun, a torch , and a light bulb all emit energy in the form of particles called photons. But sunlight is best for most plants.

Natural light vs Artificial light

The catchlights and fall of shadows appear almost identical in the image, and as Bryce explains. it was sometimes only through the numbering system of the photographs that the images could be distinguished as natural versus artificial .But of course ,strobe lighting cannot always compete with the beauty of natural light. In some cases, the striking fall of light on a subject and the mood of the image can be lost.

What is meant by artificial light is human -made and can emanate from sources including fire ,candlelight, gaslight, electric lamps and so on. Today however, the term, artificial, lighting generally refers to lighting that emanates from electric lamps .Is natural lighting than artificial lighting? Below are some of the pros and cons of natural and acritical light. Pros-Affects the tone of colours and makes skin appear healthier and more natural than does artificial lighting -has been shown to improve mood ,raising well-being ,productivity, and overall happiness.

Why type of lighting is best?

People tend took the best when illuminated by light bulbs that measure around 2700 kelvins .Most bulbs ,whether incandescent ,LED, compact fluorescent or halogen ,are labeled ,soft white /warm white (2,700-3,000 kelvins )bright white /cool white (3500-4,100 kelvins)or daylight (5,000-6,500kelvins)

Comprehend the importance of using colour temperature and light as conveyer of mood Colour temperature refers to the appearance of light provided by a light bulb, Therefore ,it is important to choose the right colour temperature based on the mood you want to create .Based on the Kelvin numbed scale ,the higher the colour temperature, the cooler, more energising light will be. light colour is important each colour of light has wavelength that affects our psychology and physiology . In many ways, proper lighting can offer individuals a number of benefits. In work areas where natural lighting is unavailable , blue or cooled-lighting has been shown to increase employee alertness and reduce eye strain.

How does colour temperature affect us?

Lighting therapy studies have found that different lighting colours affect moods, heats rates and circadian rhythms. Different intensities of light cause the body to release of Serotonin which effects our mood and energy levels. During the daylight hours, Its best to keep your monitor relatively cool with a default colour temperature of 6,500k.At night, the colour temperature should be warmer, and around 3,400k.You can adjust your monitor's setting ,or manually, you can let f. lux make the changes for you.

What do you understand by the term Angle of incidence?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia . In geometric optics, the angle of incidence between a ray incidence on a surface and the line perpendicular to the surface at the point of incidence, called the normal. The ray can be formed by any wave: optical, acoustic, microwave, X-ray and so on.

Using reflection in photography can lead to some amazing effects and beautiful images. Using water, windows, mirrors or any sort of reflective surface can change an image into a work of art. Also, using reflected light can vastly improve the quality of lighting available.

The angle of incidence for which the angle of deviation is minimum is 48 degree. Angle of Incidence equals the Angle of Reflection .without taking careful note of what it means to their photography. And yet it is one of the most basic and important physical rules of It means that you have to be able to judge the angle of the light as it strikes the subject and understand.

with photography lighting modifiers, you can get creative with lighting .Softboxes can use

techniques like feathering to make sure the lighting is falling. For example, grids can be used in portraits so the light doesn't wrap all the way around the face .Understanding modifiers will help you group the right tools to light the shot.

  • Collapsible Reflector.

  • Umbrella.

  • Softboxes.

  • Standard Reflector/Beauty Dish.

  • Ring Light.

  • Colour Gel.

  • Grid.

  • Snoot.

Light modifiers are devices that can improve the lighting in photos. Whether a scene has ambient or artificial light, you can use a light modifiers to achieve a particular mood. With modifiers, you're able to highlight something important in a scene, soften harshness, or flatter a subject .As a rule of thumb, the size of a softbox should be approximately the same size as your subject; meaning a head shot or half shot could require Softboxes in the range of about 18 to 24", whereas full-body shots could require multiple Softboxes in the 48" or larger range.

Place the umbrella to light the Subject

But make sure you're not placing the light backwards. With a shoot through umbrella, place the light so that the light source — the flash head or strobe — is pointing at the subject. With a reflective umbrella, the light hits the silver or white and bounces backwards which light is best for photography ?

Fluorescent is generally easier to find in studio lighting and does not overheat, so that is what most studio photographers use. LED is a safer option to tungsten because they tend to not overheat as much. How many watts do I need for photography lighting? Studio flash output is measured in watts per second, or Joules (basically the same thing).A home studio or small commercial studio will mange with lights of around 200w/s. Large studio will mostly only need up to around 400w/s-you rarely need to go any higher.

Be aware of a variety of camera types is

There are , however, two main types of camera available today for the general consumer the DSLD (or SLR)and the point and shoot .

Different Types of Cameras

Compact Cameras

DSLR Cameras

Mirrorless Cameras

Action(Adventure)Cameras

360 Cameras

Medium Format Cameras

Traditional Film Cameras.

DSLRs and mirrorless and compacts—oh, my! Don't worry, in this article we will help you find your way to a better understanding of the three different types of cameras available on the market today .Is SLR better than DSLR?

SLR (Single Lens Reflex) is an old form of cameras which use film to form images. SLR cameras offer slightly better quality of colour, tone and contrast. DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) refers to SLR cameras that take digital photos. There are more DSLRS available in the market so they tend to be cheaper. A camera has 3 main Components such as

LENS

BODY

SENSOR/FILM

DSLR (or digital single lens reflex) cameras take photos to the next level of image quality. This more “serious” type of camera is best known for delivering remarkably sharp and spectacular images, with beautiful background bokeh, and even high resolution videos with the help of their advanced sensors, manual settings, and wide range of interchangeable lenses.

Today, professional photographers and videographers from around the world mostly use DSLRs (now alternatively known as hybrid single reflex lens cameras or HDSLR) for commercial purposes. Many of Canon’s and Nikon’s DSLR cameras are being used for capturing hi-res images for magazines and billboards, and even full HD 1080p videos at up to 60fps for television shows and movies.

Pentax DSLRs are also well-known for being the perfect camera buddy for shooting under the most difficult weather situations. While they are considered high-end, there are more affordable entry-level DSLRs for beginners. They are suitable for almost every kind of photography out there, so literally anyone—from hobbyists to event and sports photographers—can opt for this type of camera.

Compact digital cameras literally allow anyone to capture beautiful images by simply pointing the camera at the subject and clicking the shutter. Also known as a point-and-shoot camera, it is the most user-friendly of all camera types. It is smaller and lighter, doesn’t require film or extra lenses, and does all the hard work of automatically adjusting its settings to deliver well-exposed photos every time. You won’t have the freedom of adjusting the settings to your liking, but with a good artistic eye and a knack for composition, you should have no problem producing great photos.

Mirrorless cameras are the latest in professional cameras—they are basically more compact DSLRs without the internal mirror that reflects light onto the sensor.

What’s interesting about mirrorless cameras is that they are now capable of capturing incredible, high-resolution images with even faster shutter speeds and record ultra HD videos that only the most expensive, higher-end DSLRs can produce.

Film Camera

Film cameras may seem outdated in our new digital world, but they are by no means obsolete.

Today’s film cameras provide more artistic output than ever before. Much to the delight of film photography enthusiasts, there are still classic 35mm film cameras being sold today with improved bodies and enhanced capabilities.

The younger generation has learned to love film cameras, thanks to the birth of instant and Lomography cameras, which produces (and sometimes prints out) vintage-style photos with vignettes and Instagram-style “filters” with every click of the shutter. Rangefinder cameras, which manually measure subject distance, have been improved while retaining the vintage body and analog settings.

Medium format film cameras provide an even bigger surface frame (up to 4 times bigger than the usual 35mm, but smaller than large format) and is widely-used by gallery artists for its capability to develop huge prints without losing image quality and to capture natural-looking, wide-angle shots as our eyes actually see them in the real world.

Action Cameras

We’ve definitely seen the abundance and rising popularity of action cameras in the past few years, and it’s not hard to see why. Common action cameras like the GoPro can fit in the palm of your hand, but they’re some of the most durable and versatile types of digital cameras that offer very high-resolution output.

A wide range of accessories like waterproof housing and mounts allow the user to attach action cameras to helmets, bicycles, and even drones, which enable hands-free shooting in different types of situations. This opens up a whole new world of photographic possibilities, as this type of camera allows you to capture impressive wide-angle photos and videos with sound from almost any angle and environment, whether underwater or on top of a mountain.
